Inverleigh Derailment and Rehabilitation

In the wake of a torrential 12-hour downpour in Inverleigh, Victoria, the V/Line network bore the brunt of substantial track damage, ultimately culminating in a train derailment that left 16 of the 55 coupled wagons wrecked. There were no injuries.

In response to this critical situation, the expertise of National Civil Co was called upon. Our task was formidable: to complete the construction of a new track formation and alignment, and assist with the 4.5 slew of the track for the network to be operational again. This decisive effort was crucial to restore the network to operational status once more.

The National Civil Co team operated round the clock in a safe and efficient manner, aiming to expedite the project's completion. This endeavour was driven by the urgency to re-establish network functionality and accessibility.

Beyond the track formation itself, works included a range of scope and responsibilities. These included complex earthworks, intricate track reinstatement works, culvert replacement, and a meticulous clean-up operation necessitated by the derailment. The restoration process extended further, encompassing the establishment of access tracks and hardstands, as well as the comprehensive removal of residual materials from the site.

Our collaboration with the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) extended over several months as National Civil Co continued to assist ARTC to ensure the site was brought back to safe operation, rehabilitated and stakeholder hand-over completed.

This endeavour stands as a testament to National Civil Co's agility and commitment to facilitating swift recovery in the face of such unforeseen disruptions or damages to national infrastructure.  Our team's dedication ensured the resumption of normality, further solidifying our role as a reliable partner in ensuring vital infrastructure's resilience and safety.
